22 Notes 22 Lives

22 Notes 22 Lives

The number 22 is often cited with regard to our military veterans. It is said to be the average number of US service veterans who take their lives every day.

That number comes from a 2012 Department of Veterans Affairs study that found that 18 to 22 veterans take their lives every day, Some think that the true number could be even higher.

No matter how one might debate the actual figure, there is no doubt that even one life lost this way is one too many.

Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries, drug and alcohol abuse are said to be among the causes. And sadly, it is estimated that fewer than 25 percent of veterans who committed suicide in the 2012 report had sought mental health care at the VA.

What can we do? Let’s reach out to our fellow veterans. Be a wing-man, a battle buddy, a Ship-mate. Guide them to local, state or federal resources. Learn what the warning signs are and act on them.

You can help make a difference in someone’s life.
