Help “Keep the Home Fires Burning”

Epiphany Episcopal Church, (originally the Epiphany Chapel and Church), is the only known World War I Chapel in the United States. It is located at 1419 Odenton Rd, Odenton, Maryland.

It was consecrated on 3 June 1918, as a chapel where enlisting young soldiers-both white and black-were welcomed with worship services, dinners, dances, and counseling. Family members were invited to spend the night in the accommodations on the second floor, using the time to say “good-bye.” It is a designated historical site of the Maryland Historical Trust and was added to the U.S. National Registry of Historic Places in 2001. Epiphany Episcopal works to ensure that the church remains true to its Christian Faith and historic roots.

Since its inception, Epiphany has continued to serve as a spiritual home for those assigned to what is now Ft. Meade and for the greater Odenton community, offering religious services, Godly Play for children and youth, a co-op preschool play group three days a week, support to local organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Odenton, the Odenton Historical Society, the Odenton Volunteer Fire Department, area schools, and a cemetery that provides a resting place for individuals of all faiths.

Under the leadership of Rector Emerita Rev. Dr. Phebe McPherson, Epiphany established a World War I museum that houses irreplaceable World War I artifacts that demonstrate in a real way how the church enriched the faith of thousands of soldiers and their families who faced an uncertain future as they supported our country’s World War I campaign. A memorial garden honors over 6000 Chaplains of WW I whose names  are placed on brass plaques for all to see. Tours of the museum are available to the public by appointment, and virtually on the website: epiphany-md.org

Recently the HVAC unit failed and is unable to be repaired. Epiphany Episcopal is seeking contributions to “keep the home fires burning” and protect the WWI museum.
