THE NATIONAL SALUTE – 2023

The date was November 11, 1918 and the weapons of Europe fell silent after over four years of war.
The cost of the First World War in human lives was unimaginable, more than 65 million fought, of whom more than half were killed or injured.
On November 11, 1921, the United States Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dedicated in Arlington National Cemetery and continues to be guarded by soldiers of the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment, “The Old Guard”.
The National Salute, re-instituted in 2015, is a means to show our deep respect for our Unknown Soldiers buried in the plaza of the Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery and all veterans.
Taps For Veterans is asking all buglers, trumpet, and cornet players to assist us in continuing this tradition and participate in the National Salute ceremony on the 11th Hour, of the 11th Day, of the 11th Month.

Participants may choose a location of their choosing. Many towns across the country have special WWI memorials which would be a perfect location.
All participants will be listed on the Taps for Veterans website and those that send in a self-addressed stamped envelope, will receive a TAPS IN HONORED GLORY and TAPS FOR VETERANS patch. Mailing instructions will be provided with registration confirmation.

A short message about the appropriateness of sounding Taps on Veterans Day:
While this is not a Veterans Day ceremony and we do not want to take away from the meaning, this is in honor of the Unknown Soldier.
November 11th was originally Armistice Day which ended WWI on that date in 1918. Three years later an Unknown Soldier from the Great War was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
And of course, on this day we honor ALL veterans who have worn the uniform.
